BioWorks appoints José Carvalho as Regulatory Director to Accelerate Innovation

Bridging the Gap Between Brazilian Biological Innovation and European Regulatory Realities

What is the significance of the BioWorks appoints José Carvalho as Regulatory Director announcement?
BioWorks Europe has brought on José Carvalho, an industry veteran with over 20 years of experience, to lead its regulatory strategy across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). His primary mission is to navigate Europe’s complex registration landscape to bring proven, innovative biological crop solutions—many already successful in Brazil—to European growers who urgently need sustainable alternatives.

What specific challenges does José Carvalho aim to address in the European market?
The move directly addresses Europe’s “time-to-market” hurdle. While biological products in Brazil can reach the field in a year, European registration can take up to a decade. BioWorks appoints José Carvalho as Regulatory Director to leverage his expertise with the OECD and IBMA to streamline these timelines, ensuring that European agriculture does not miss the window for cutting-edge biotechnological advancements.

How does the BioFirst Group synergy support this regulatory push?
As part of the BioFirst Group, BioWorks has direct access to high-performance innovations from BIOTROP in Brazil. By strengthening regulatory leadership, BioWorks intends to transfer these large-scale, proven biological technologies to EMEA markets, supporting BioFirst Group’s vision of becoming a top 10 global agchem company with a 100% pure biosolutions portfolio.

Westerlo, Belgium – 21 May 2026 – BioWorks Europe welcomes José Carvalho to its team as Regulatory Director, supporting the faster introduction of innovative biological crop solutions across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Carvalho joins BioWorks at a crucial time: demand for biological solutions continues to grow, while long and complex registration procedures make Europe miss the innovation window for biological solutions. He brings more than 20 years of experience in the agricultural industry, having held various roles and been actively involved in initiatives like the IBMA Microbial Professional Group and the OECD Expert Group on Biopesticides (EGBP).

“What attracted me to BioWorks was the ambition to bring Brazilian biological innovation to Europe,” says José Carvalho. “European growers should have fair access to these same innovations that support both sustainable production and farm profitability.”

BioWorks Europe and BIOTROP in Brazil are both part of BioFirst Group, one of the world’s largest pure biological players in agriculture. This gives BioWorks direct access to biological innovations proven under large-scale commercial farming conditions in Brazil, where innovation cycles are significantly faster than in Europe.

“Our mission is to make sure innovative products already proven in Brazil also become available to European growers,” says Lara Ramaekers, Vice-President at BioWorks.
