Brazil Highlights Bioinputs, Innovation and Women’s Leadership at FAO COAG 30

Charing the 30th Session in Rome, Brazil Showcases Microbial Breakthroughs and Inclusive Rural Development

Rome, Italy | July 2026

The 30th Session of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Committee on Agriculture (COAG 30), held in Rome from July 20–24, 2026, brought together representatives from more than 130 countries. Chaired by Brazil, the session highlighted the country’s growing global leadership in sustainable agriculture, biological innovations, and inclusive rural development.

Advancing Bioinputs and Microbial Science

A major focal point of the session was the growing role of bioinputs in sustainable crop production. Dr. Mariangela Hungria, Embrapa researcher and 2025 World Food Prize recipient, presented compelling research demonstrating that co-inoculation using rhizobia and Azospirillum brasilense boosted soybean yield gains from roughly 8.4% to 16.1%, proving the high value of biological solutions in replacing chemical intensity.

“Biological technologies are suitable for farming systems of all scales, supporting both productivity and environmental sustainability.”

Empowering Women Farmers

In alignment with the FAO’s declaration of 2026 as the International Year of Women Farmers, Fernanda Machiaveli, Brazil’s Minister of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture, emphasized integrated public policies designed to improve rural women’s access to credit, technical assistance, and market opportunities. Furthermore, Brazil announced a new partnership with FAO to establish a global study strengthening rural women’s economic autonomy.

Shaping the Global Agenda

With Ambassador Carla Barroso Carneiro chairing the committee and high-level participation from MAPA, CropLife Brasil, and ApexBrasil, COAG 30 successfully reinforced the importance of collaborative, science-based solutions in building resilient global food systems for the 2027–2028 biennium.

“Driving the global transformation toward sustainable, science-based agriculture.”
