Unlocking the Value of Bio-Inputs Through Collaborative Partnerships

Bio-Alliance South Africa–Brazil 2025 Conference • Future Africa, University of Pretoria • 5–6 November 2025

The Bio-Alliance South Africa–Brazil 2025 Conference brought together government leaders, regulators, researchers, growers, and industry experts to explore how science, innovation, and collaboration can accelerate the adoption of biologicals in South Africa.
174 DELEGATES • 4 NATIONS

Reflecting growing confidence in the potential of biologicals to shape the future of agriculture, delegates from South Africa, Brazil, France, and Switzerland engaged with policy frameworks, grower challenges, global innovation trends, and field demonstrations—all aimed at strengthening a bio-driven future.

Day 1 – Context, Policy & Grower Challenges

The conference opened with a welcome address from the South African Minister of Agriculture, Mr John Steenhuisen, delivered by the Director-General of Agriculture, Mr Mooketsa Ramasodi. The address emphasized science as a bridge between South Africa and Brazil and highlighted the role of biologicals in driving agricultural sustainability, competitiveness, and practical collaboration through low-risk, bio-based solutions.

Mr Ramasodi reinforced this vision by stressing the importance of strong partnerships between government, academia, and industry, highlighting regulatory efficiency and collaborative action as key enablers of South Africa’s transition toward more sustainable agricultural practices.

Key Enablers Identified

  • Predictable, science-based regulation to build confidence in product performance.
  • Supportive financing and market incentives for biological innovation.
  • Mainstreaming biologicals based on Brazil’s national experience, as shared by His Excellency Benedicto Fonseca Filho, Ambassador of Brazil.

Day 2 – Focus on Innovation & Application

Day 2 shifted from policy to practice. Researchers from the University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch University provided a foundational overview of biologicals, soil health, and bio-based agricultural systems.

Presentations showcased advances in microbials, metabolites, delivery systems, biofactories, and integrated pest management (IPM). Case studies illustrated how bio-inputs can improve consistency, reduce reliance on chemical interventions, and help producers meet stringent market and retailer requirements.

From Lab to Field

A standout highlight was the live field demonstration, where delegates observed biological solutions in real-world conditions, gaining first-hand insight into performance and application. The session underscored that technological innovation must be paired with effective extension services and sustained research investment.

In her closing remarks, SABO Chairperson Debbie Matteucci emphasized that the Bio-Alliance has “laid a foundation that will transform our biological wealth into a shared opportunity for both nations.” She highlighted the strength of institutional ties and encouraged continued cooperation in research and policy development.

By aligning regulatory approaches and showcasing innovation in action, the event positioned biologicals as a core driver of agricultural resilience, competitiveness, and long-term sustainability.
