From Research to Reality: How RTDS Group Is Shaping Sustainable Agriculture in Europe
Bridging the Gap Between Scientific Discovery and Field-Level Impact
By Ana Babic, EU Project and Communication Manager, RTDS Group
European agriculture stands at a critical juncture. Farmers are being asked to produce more food while using fewer resources, adapting to climate uncertainty, and meeting increasingly ambitious sustainability goals. Across the continent, researchers, innovators, and industry leaders are searching for solutions that can help agriculture become more resilient without compromising productivity.
Yet, innovation alone is not enough. The real challenge lies in ensuring that promising discoveries make the journey from research laboratories to farmers’ fields. RTDS Group has positioned itself at the centre of this transition, helping connect science, industry, policymakers, and stakeholders to transform research into practical solutions capable of creating lasting impact.
SAGROPIA: Putting Biological Innovation to the Test
At the heart of RTDS Group’s participation in the recent BioAg World Congress 2026 was SAGROPIA, a Horizon Europe-funded initiative focused on advancing sustainable crop protection strategies in potato and sugar beet production. The project evaluates Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches that combine biological and low-risk crop protection solutions with strong agronomic, environmental, and economic performance.
What makes SAGROPIA particularly significant is its commitment to practical application. By involving researchers, SMEs, advisors, industry partners, and agricultural stakeholders throughout the process, the project ensures that innovation remains firmly rooted in real-world farming conditions.
The Power of Ecosystem Collaboration
One of the strongest messages emerging from the congress was that no single organization can drive agricultural transformation alone. Collaboration is essential to:
- Streamline Regulation: Partners like Certis Biologicals emphasized the need for more efficient regulatory pathways that bring biological products to market faster.
- Validate Alternatives: AMOÉBA shared encouraging results from biofungicide trials in potato and sugar beet systems, demonstrating biological alternatives to conventional chemistry.
Beyond Crop Protection: A Broader Vision
RTDS Group’s work extends far beyond SAGROPIA. Through projects like MIBIREM (soil restoration), VIRTIGATION (advanced diagnostics), BIOVEXO (biological solutions against Xylella fastidiosa), and UNTWIST (climate resilience through Camelina sativa), the group demonstrates that sustainable innovation must be scalable and practical in real-world conditions.
Building Bridges Between Science and Society
As an Austria-based research and innovation competence centre, RTDS Group specializes in creating connections. Its expertise includes stakeholder engagement, policy analysis, communication strategies, and citizen science initiatives. In many ways, RTDS Group serves as a translator, bridging the gap between scientific discovery and practical implementation.
