Fostering Innovation and Sustainability in BioAg

The transition toward sustainable agriculture is no longer a distant ambition but an urgent global necessity. At the forefront of this transformation in Spain and across Europe stands the Spanish Association of Agronutrient Manufacturers (AEFA), an organization that has played a pivotal role in shaping the evolution of BioAg over the past two decades.

Founded more than 25 years ago, AEFA represents over 85% of Spain’s biostimulant industry, positioning itself as a central force in promoting innovation, sustainability, and scientific rigor in agricultural inputs. The association unites producers of fertilizers, plant nutrition products, microorganisms, biostimulants, and biocontrol solutions under a shared vision: to enhance crop productivity while safeguarding natural resources.

AEFA’s mission is deeply aligned with broader European sustainability frameworks, including the EU Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy. Through active participation in regulatory dialogues and policy forums, the association ensures that farmers have access to advanced, efficient, and environmentally responsible agricultural tools. Spain’s emergence as a European leader in biostimulant research, development, and export is a direct reflection of AEFA’s sustained commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration.

Strategic Priorities for a Sustainable Agricultural Future

As the BioAg sector evolves, AEFA has defined a set of strategic priorities aimed at accelerating the adoption of biological solutions. Central to these priorities is the promotion of science-based biostimulants and bio-based technologies that improve nutrient efficiency, mitigate abiotic stress, and enhance crop quality while reducing environmental impact.

Regulatory harmonization remains another key focus, particularly under the EU Fertilising Products Regulation (EU 2019/1009). AEFA actively advocates for frameworks that not only ensure safety and quality but also facilitate innovation and market access for biological products. In parallel, the association is strengthening sustainability across the industry through its Sustainability Strategy, which aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This includes measurable indicators to track progress among member companies, reinforcing accountability and transparency.

Farmer adoption is also a critical pillar. AEFA promotes knowledge transfer through training, communication, and technical guidance to ensure that biological products are used effectively. Additionally, the association champions circular economy practices, encouraging the development of biostimulants derived from agricultural and marine byproducts to reduce environmental footprints and close production loops.

Fostering Innovation Through Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange

AEFA functions as a collaborative ecosystem that connects industry players, researchers, universities, and public institutions. Through technical working groups and specialized committees, the association addresses scientific, regulatory, and environmental challenges impacting the BioAg sector. Its commitment to research and development is reflected in active participation in R&D initiatives and the promotion of harmonized standards across Europe. Equally important is AEFA’s focus on technology transfer, ensuring that scientific discoveries translate into practical, field-level solutions for farmers.

Training programs, seminars, and technical publications further strengthen knowledge dissemination, enhancing understanding of biostimulants, their modes of action, and their agronomic value. The implementation of compliance plans and ethical codes underscores AEFA’s dedication to transparency and responsible industry practices. Collaboration extends beyond national borders, with AEFA actively engaging with European and international organizations such as EBIC and the Biocontrol Coalition to advance legislative improvements and scientific progress.

Opportunities and Challenges in the BioAg Landscape

The BioAg sector is experiencing significant momentum, driven by policy shifts toward sustainability and increasing demand for environmentally responsible agricultural inputs. Spain’s leadership in biostimulant innovation, combined with advancements in biotechnology, precision agriculture, and climate-resilient solutions, presents substantial opportunities for growth. Innovations involving microorganisms, enzymes, metabolites, and digital agronomic tools are reshaping modern agriculture, while circular economy models are unlocking new value from agricultural and marine by-products.

However, these opportunities are accompanied by complex challenges. Regulatory uncertainty under EU frameworks, particularly regarding microbial biostimulants and animal-derived products, continues to hinder innovation. Additional burdens from REACH+ requirements and lengthy authorization timelines create barriers, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. Moreover, the need for deeper scientific understanding of plant–microbe interactions and product efficacy under varying environmental conditions remains a critical area for research. AEFA actively addresses these challenges by advocating for scientific, proportionate, and innovation-friendly regulatory systems.

Bridging Policy, Industry, and Farmers

By acting as a bridge between policymakers, industry stakeholders, and farmers, AEFA ensures that regulations support both innovation and environmental safety. The association contributes to industry development through the establishment of quality standards, ethical guidelines, and sustainability frameworks while empowering farmers by providing reliable information, training, and technical support to facilitate the adoption of biological technologies. Transparency and credibility are reinforced through compliance programs and responsible communication, strengthening trust across the value chain. Through collaboration with international organizations, AEFA also promotes harmonized, science-based legislation at a global level.

A Call for Global Collaboration in BioAg

As global agriculture faces mounting challenges, including climate change, soil degradation, and resource scarcity, the importance of biological solutions has never been greater. The BioAg sector stands at a pivotal moment, offering a pathway toward more resilient, efficient, and sustainable food systems. AEFA emphasizes that progress will depend on collaboration, scientific rigor, and shared responsibility. Innovation must be accompanied by transparency, sustainability, and regulatory clarity for ongoing impact.

From Spain, a country deeply rooted in agricultural tradition and innovation, AEFA extends a call to the global BioAg community to come together, exchange knowledge, and drive collective action. Platforms like the BioAgTech World Congress serve as catalysts for this collaboration, fostering partnerships that can shape the future of sustainable agriculture.
