Women as Architects of a Scientific Agricultural Economy
By Sandeepa Kanitkar, MD, Kan Biosys
“Women are no longer on the margins of agriculture; they are moving to its centre, influencing not just how we grow food but also how we design the future of the agricultural economy.”
It is both a privilege and a responsibility to contribute this editorial as Chair of the Women in Agriculture Forum. At a time when agriculture itself is being redefined by science, sustainability, and innovation, the role of women within this transformation is undergoing a fundamental shift. We are witnessing a structural realignment of economic power and leadership, where the conversation has moved from empowerment to asking how women are shaping the future of the global economy.
By 2030, women are expected to control nearly 40% of global investable wealth. This signals a transition from inclusion to influence, where women are not just participants but key allocators of capital and drivers of strategic direction. For agriculture, particularly in sectors like biologicals, biosolutions, and sustainable inputs, this shift is transformative.
Reimagining Women’s Role in a Science-Led Agricultural Future
Agriculture is rapidly becoming a science-driven ecosystem. Our focus is clear: to move beyond participation and enable women as creators of value and drivers of innovation. This includes:
- • Enabling agri-biological ventures led by women
- • Creating pathways for scientific leadership
- • Supporting entrepreneurship in value chains
- • Facilitating access to capital and markets
From Inclusion to Economic Architecture
Inclusion is no longer a parallel agenda; it is embedded within the architecture of the future economy. Sustainable growth will depend on integrating women into the core of economic design as decision-makers.
Science, Biologicals, and the Innovation Imperative
Biology, data, and intelligent systems will define the future of agriculture. The role of women is critical as AI, precision agriculture, and biotechnology converge. We must strengthen women’s participation in agri-biotech and biological sciences.
A Defining Decade for Women
Women are poised to become a powerhouse across:
- Capital allocation
- Scientific innovation
- Entrepreneurship
- Workforce leadership
Our Way Forward
Our commitment is to deliver measurable impact by scaling women-led enterprises and enabling access to global partnerships. The future of agriculture will be built with women and, increasingly, by them.
The UN declared 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer – IYWF-2026. This Forum truly respects her immense contribution.
