Amy’s Perspective: Strengthening BioAg

Agriculture is an industry built on resilience, innovation, and stewardship of the land. At every level—whether in boardrooms guiding strategy, in laboratories pushing the frontiers of science, or on farms ensuring food security—women have long been central to that story. Today, as agriculture undergoes one of its most profound transformations toward more sustainable and biological solutions, women are leading the way.

Throughout history, pioneers have inspired us by blending courage with creativity. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring awakened the world to the environmental responsibilities of science. Temple Grandin reshaped animal agriculture by designing systems grounded in empathy. In our own sector of BioAg, Pam Marrone has been a trailblazer. By founding and scaling multiple companies, she helped build credibility for biological solutions, showing how innovation and entrepreneurship could transform crop protection into a global industry. I am also continually inspired by the women I meet today.

We at Invaio are doing our bit by offering opportunities to women leaders. Farmers in Latin America and North America are early adopters of new tools because they see the value of stewardship for the next generation. Leading women scientists, together with the rest of the R&D team at Invaio, are designing novel peptides through our Biologicals by Design™ platform—asking not only how to solve a pathogen challenge, but how to do so in a way that protects ecosystems.

Women in leadership positions bring a collaborative and decisive approach that strengthens our industry and our companies. These contributions matter because the challenges before us—to feed a growing population sustainably—require diverse thinking and leadership. Women are bringing that perspective every day, across disciplines and geographies.

As we celebrate women in agriculture, I am reminded of Wangari Maathai’s words: “You cannot protect the environment unless you empower people, you inform them, and you help them understand that these resources are their own, that they must protect them.” Agriculture’s future will be shaped by the people we empower—and women are at the very heart of that journey.

The next generation is already rising. They are young scientists coding models for discovery, daughters stepping into leadership on family farms, and entrepreneurs launching the next wave of sustainable solutions. Our role as leaders is to ensure they have every opportunity to thrive, because when women lead, agriculture flourishes.
