High-Tech Farm in Zhejiang Automates Sowing and Harvesting of Vegetables
Zhejiang Province in China is now home to a pioneering smart agriculture demonstration park that’s redefining how vegetables are grown. Located in Deqing County, this facility fully automates sowing to harvest without a single human touch.
Fully Automated Systems in Action: The farm uses a powerful integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to manage the entire vegetable production process. From lettuce to arugula, every step—transplanting, transport, cleaning, and climate regulation—is automated for maximum efficiency.
A key innovation is the farm’s auto-transplanting machine, developed in-house by Zhejiang Houji Intelligent Technology. It transplants 30 seedlings in just 40 seconds, delivering a 70% efficiency increase compared to manual methods.
Cleaner, Healthier, More Productive Produce: Vegetables produced here are free from pesticides and heavy metals, while yields are 5 to 7 times higher compared to traditional open-field farming.
Harvested vegetables are swiftly transported to the market, supplying major retailers such as Freshippo and Yum! Brands, demonstrating a seamless farm-to-shelf pipeline.
Why This Innovation Matters:
- Labor savings: Automation reduces reliance on manual labor through every farming stage.
- Efficiency boosts: Rapid transplanting and integrated logistics increase throughput.
- Food safety: Controlled environments deliver cleaner produce with minimal contamination risk.
- Consistent yield: Optimized growing conditions stabilize and multiply output.
Framing the Future of Smart Farming: This project exemplifies how AI and IoT-driven automation can reshape food production—delivering safe, high-quality vegetables efficiently. It serves not only as a commercial success but also as a model for scaling smart farming practices worldwide.
