The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has provisionally approved two new pesticide common names under its globally recognized ISO 1750 standard, which regulates the nomenclature of pesticides and agrochemicals. The names were approved by the ISO Technical Committee TC 81, which oversees all naming conventions in this domain.
About the Newly Approved Names:
- Fendioxypyracil: Proposed by BASF, this herbicide represents a significant advancement in the management of herbicide-resistant weed populations. Though specific mode-of-action details have not yet been released, early indications suggest that fendioxypyracil targets critical metabolic pathways in broadleaf and grassy weeds. BASF’s submission passed the technical review process and is now under international consideration.
- Toxapyzone: Developed by Shandong Dehao Chemical Co., Ltd., toxapyzone is a novel benzoylpyrazole herbicide. Pyrazole-based compounds are known for their selective toxicity and favorable environmental profiles. The inclusion of toxapyzone under ISO 1750 highlights its growing potential in global crop protection strategies, particularly in cereals and high-value crops.
Regulatory Timeline and Procedure:
If no objections are filed—or once objections are resolved—the names will be permanently adopted in the next annual update of ISO 1750. Once formalized, these names will become the global standard used in scientific publications, regulatory documents, product labels, and international commerce.
