Renaissance BioScience, a pioneer in yeast bioengineering, has been honored with the “Crop Protection Solution of the Year” award in the fifth annual Global Awards program by AgTech Breakthrough. This recognition highlights Renaissance’s commitment to innovation in the agriculture and food technology sectors, showcasing their groundbreaking advancements in sustainable pest management.

Revolutionary RNAi Biopesticide Technology

At the forefront of this award is Renaissance’s yeast-based RNA interference (RNAi) precision biopesticide platform technology. This revolutionary approach allows for the customization of biopesticides to target a wide range of pests, providing an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chemical pesticides. By precisely targeting essential genes in pests, this technology offers both efficacy and sustainability, a much-needed solution in today’s agricultural landscape.

Dr. John Husnik, Chief Scientific Officer at Renaissance, expressed the team’s excitement: “We are thrilled to receive AgTech Breakthrough’s 2024 award for our yeast-based RNAi biopesticide technology. Our solution is elegant, precise, and capable of targeting various pest species. This recognition affirms our technology’s potential to revolutionize crop protection.”

Addressing Crop Loss and Sustainability

Pest management is a critical concern, with nearly 40% of annual crop production lost to pests, translating into billions of dollars in economic losses. Bryan Vaughn, Managing Director of AgTech Breakthrough, noted the significance of Renaissance’s approach: “Renaissance’s RNAi technology is straightforward yet powerful. Their advanced bioengineering platform is shaping the future of sustainable agriculture, offering a viable solution to invasive pest challenges.”

The RNAi biopesticide platform enables the expression of specific RNAi bioeffector molecules in customized yeast strains. These strains can be tailored to target specific pests, including the notorious Colorado potato beetle, which has developed resistance to many conventional pesticides. The platform technology allows for large-scale, cost-effective production, making it a practical solution for farmers globally.

Seamless Integration for Farmers

Renaissance’s biopesticide can be applied using traditional crop protection methods. Once the inert yeast is consumed by the targeted pest, the RNAi bioeffectors are released, effectively silencing the target genes and leading to the pest’s demise. Importantly, any residual yeast degrades harmlessly in the environment, ensuring safety for humans, plants, and beneficial insects.

As Renaissance BioScience continues to innovate, they are actively collaborating with industry leaders to expand their crop protection solutions to address other significant agricultural threats. The recognition from AgTech Breakthrough not only validates.
