Introduction

NRGene Green, a subsidiary of NRGene Canada and a global leader in AI-driven genomics, has announced a groundbreaking development—canola lines showing complete resistance to clubroot disease, based on results from field trials conducted in Saskatchewan in 2025.

Breakthrough Field Trial Results

  • 0% disease incidence was observed in advanced resistant lines (Donor A & Donor B), even under extreme pathogen pressure.
  • New hybrid varieties containing the resistance trait displayed near-perfect protection, with infection rates at just 0.2%.
  • Stabilized breeding lines consistently maintained high resistance, showing infection rates below 1% across multiple conditions.
  • In contrast, existing industry-resistant varieties suffered severe disease incidence between 74% and 85%.

Why This Is a Game-Changer

With Canada’s canola industry generating approximately $43.7 billion annually, this innovation could dramatically transform oilseed production by offering farmers the first highly effective, commercially viable defense against clubroot (Plasmodiophora brassicae).

Innovative Approach, Sustainable Impact

  • Non-GMO genomic precision: Using AI-driven tools, NRGene identified natural resistance genes, enabling precision gene pyramiding and targeted introgression through molecular breeding.
  • Durability across environments: Resistance remains stable across diverse genetic backgrounds and field conditions.
  • Commercial scalability: The lines are fully compatible with existing breeding pipelines, enabling rapid integration into commercial hybrid development.
  • Environmental benefits: This breakthrough reduces reliance on fungicides, curbing yield losses, lowering input costs, and enhancing farmer margins.

Leadership & Vision

Dr. Masood Rizvi, General Manager of NRGene Green, stated: “This represents a global breakthrough in sustainable agriculture… farmers worldwide will now have access to canola varieties that combine complete disease immunity with commercial viability.”
Gil Ronen, CEO of NRGene, added: “Our AI-driven genomics technology solves agriculture’s toughest problems—our solution offers truly effective resistance while protecting yields and the environment.”

Path to Commercialization

All development, IP protection, and commercialization efforts are being led by NRGene Green. The resistant lines and DNA markers are now available for license to seed companies and breeders for integration into commercial breeding programs globally.

Why It Matters

This breakthrough offers a robust, long-term solution to clubroot—a major disease threat that historically caused devastating yield losses. By enabling durable, scalable resistance, NRGene is safeguarding food security and reinforcing sustainability in canola agriculture.
